What inspired you to start writing, and how did you first get into it?
I've never not written. I remember standing at the teacher's podium in my 4th grade class doing a read aloud of a story I'd written about siblings with matching names (ex: Stephen and Stephanie). I also remember the exact moment I realized it was terrible, but had to keep reading.
I'm an only child and had to keep myself entertained a lot when I was younger. Eventually I just started writing down the things that were taking up space in my brain. I had a geocities fanfic site back in the day (please tell me I'm not the only one who remembers those!) and that was my first real taste of having an audience and knowing people liked what I was writing.
Can you tell us about the moment you realized you wanted to write a novel?
I can and it's ridiculous.
For as much as I've written, it's mainly been shorter things like one-shots, articles, etc. I had always dreamed of writing a book, but never really thought it would be something I could actually do because my brain just didn't really work that way.
But one day in fall of 2023, I was out running errands and this fully-formed plot dropped into my brain. Beginning to end, characters and all. So what did I do? I pulled over into a Costco parking lot and cried because I was so freaked out. Then I called one of my besties to ask what I was supposed to do. Once she talked me down and told me to go write it, I went home and banged out a 22-page outline. I had never outlined anything in my life. It was just all there.
And here we are.
What’s your writing process like? Do you have any routines or rituals that help you focus?
To call anything a "process" seems wildly generous. LOL I write best when it's dark out, but maybe that's because I have always done most of my writing at night. I've always made playlists for writing and they are very specifically crafted from songs that I love the sound of, but won't be distracted by. I bought a clicky keyboard halfway through writing and I swear that was the best decision ever. But saying there's something that helps me focus would be a lie, because neurospicy. 🙃
Can you share a bit about your main characters and what makes them special?
Oh, the way I love Jase and Nikko. For me, I think they're both relatable in some way. Jase is an all-around good guy - he's sweet, a little snarky, loves his friends and his students and just wants a little bit of adventure here and there. Nikko has an extraordinary life, but also knows what it's like to be anxious and feel like he's missing out sometimes. Creating them both and bringing them together was almost easy... they wanted it to be this way!
What do you hope readers take away from your novel?
If anyone takes anything away from reading TMKP, I hope it's that they finish the story with a smile. I want readers to get lost in this world for a little bit and enjoy the time they spend there with Jase and Nikko and all the other characters. (I really think you'll like them, too!)
And, very honestly, if anyone decides they want to learn more about k-pop because of it, I will be THRILLED.
